Cournot Oligopoly with Network Effects
نویسندگان
چکیده
The nature of competition is quite different in network industries as compared to the other, more traditional, ones. The purpose of the present paper is to thoroughly examine the implications of these differences as reflected in the dependence of equilibrium outputs, price and profits on industry concentration. We restrict the analysis to oligopolistic competition amongst firms in a market characterized by positive (direct) network effects when the relevant network is industry-wide. The proofs rely on lattice-theoretic methods; this approach allows us to unify in a common setting the general results in the literature on network goods, weakening considerably the assumptions. As a by-product we offer an alternative explanation of the start-off phenomenon in network industries. JEL codes: C72, D43, L13, L14.

This thesis is composed by three different studies on oligopolies. The first chapter is on oligopolies with perfect complements; the second chapter studies oligopolies with positive network effects and incompatible networks, and the last one deals with a polluting duopoly subject to environmental regulation. Specifically, the first chapter provides a thorough characterization of the properties ...
متن کاملOligopoly with Capacity Constraints and Thresholds
Abstract Extended Oligopoly models will be introduced and examined in which the firms might face capacity limits, thresholds for minimal and maximal moves, and antitrust thresholds in the case of partial cooperation. Similar situation occurs when there is an additional cost of output adjustment, which is discontinuous at zero due to set-up costs. In these cases the payoff functions of the...

Incentives and Welfare Effect of Sharing Firm-Specific Information by Jim Y. Jin* This paper studies the incentives and the welfare effect of sharing firm-specific information in asymmetric Cournot and Bertrand oligopoly with mixed substitute and complement goods. Revealing firm-specific cost information is the dominant strategy in Cournot oligopoly, while concealing is so in Bertrand oligopoly...
متن کاملUnion Bargaining in an Oligopoly Market with Cournot-Bertrand Competition: Welfare and Policy Implications
We investigate the welfare effect of union activity in a relatively new oligopoly model, the Cournot-Bertrand model, where one firm competes in output (a la Cournot) and the other firm competes in price (a la Bertrand). The Nash equilibrium prices, outputs, and profits are quite diverse in this model, with the competitive advantage going to the Cournot-type competitor. A comparison of the resul...

In this article we revisit the classic comparison between Bertrand and Cournot competition in the presence of a cartel of firms that faces outsiders acting individually. This competition setting enables to deal with both non-cooperative and cooperative oligopoly games. We concentrate on industries consisting of symmetrically differentiated products where firms operate at a constant and identica...
متن کاملImitation Dynamic and Nash Equilibrium in Cournot Oligopoly with Capacities
The paper considers an imitation dynamic in the context of Cournot oligopoly. The pure ”imitate-the-best” behavior can lead to an outcome inconsistent with Cournot-Nash equilibrium. The paper extends purely imitative behavior to imperfect imitation in the two-stage model with capacities and prices. This variation in the imitative behavior improves efficiency and makes the Cournot-Nash equilibri...
